Normally I know when I'm somewhere cool because I start twitching and have to run away before the end of my first pint of cider. Here, however, I didn't even notice until someone pointed it out, which can only be a good thing. Everyone in here look like they're independently wealthy (but not in a trust fund way), are mates with pop stars and DJ in Barcelona in their spare time. This is a cool, laid back place to drink... beware the stampede.
Arch by name and arch by nature - complete with more than an occasional rumble from trains passing above. I've often wondered at the skill of the brickies gone by who built these arches and sitting in Arch 635, I can't help but ponder how the bricks at the apex seemingly hang defying gravity. More modern interior features include a stainless steel top bar, exposed alloy aircon ducting, a pool table and a football table. Furnishings comprise a scattering of leather chesterfields, old church chairs, pine tables and a vaulting horse - one wonders.
The crowd is young and, unusually for Claphamites, more funkster than trustafarian. The cocktail selection is disco, almost kitsch, including Tequilla Sunrises and Black Russians. If they don't appeal there's bog standard draught lager and a eight-strong new world wine list.
Up front there's table football and red leather chesterfields or stools for those who fancy propping up the bar; at the back an airy conservatory has a pool table, decks and, on football nights, "Clapham's biggest screen'. It's friendly, with a good mix of people. |
